Solving the Decade Search Problem

Our issue regarding searching decades is alleviated by the search tool * (asterisk). It essentially truncates keywords. Using this within the Date field as 18* (for the 19th century) or 195* (for 1950-1959) will give us the results we need. In this case, the system solves our issue.

Below are two videos where I show the searches in action for example. These videos are a little blurry. You need to click the bottom, right hand symbol that will make the video play full screen in order to see what is happening.

The first example (below) shows that we can search by decade by using the asterisk key (I use 194* which will give the hits for 1940-1949) in combination with a subject keyword (I choose roses). Note that the drop down menus have only Dublin Core metadata fields, not our PDHC metadata fields, as choices. This is how the system works when searching accross collections (because they can and usually do have different metadata schemas).

In this next example, searching within just one collection gives us drop-down lists of our PDHC metadata field titles. I do the exact same search.
